Choosing Yunnan Tea for Different Markets: Categories, Channels and a First-Order Plan

Tea workers picking fresh leaves across a sunlit terraced tea garden

The right Yunnan range is decided by the sales channel, not by the mountain. Our catalogue is 26 lots across five categories — raw Pu-erh, ripe Pu-erh, Dian Hong black tea, Yunnan white tea and one purple-bud specialty — and the same 26 get combined very differently depending on whether the buyer runs a tea house, an online shop, a distribution business or a gifting programme. This guide maps the usual combinations, then sets out what to confirm in writing before a first order.

Start with the market and sales channel

A tea-house menu, an online sampler, a specialist retail shelf and a corporate gift box ask for different products. Use the market notes below as a starting point, then confirm the exact tea through samples, tasting notes and the declared lot before placing a larger order.

What actually changes between markets

Four things move, and the tea itself moves least. The price ladder decides how many tiers a shelf can carry. The format decides whether a customer will try the tea at all. The documentation decides whether a lot clears customs on the date you promised your own client. The story decides whether a named mountain reads as an asset or as an unexplained surcharge. A range that works in Kuala Lumpur and fails in Rotterdam usually fails on documentation or format, not on taste.

  • Price ladder: how many tiers the shelf can carry, from everyday drinking to collectible.
  • Format: cake, loose leaf, mini-tablet or sampler — whichever your customer will actually open.
  • Documentation: what the destination market asks for before the lot can be sold.
  • Story: whether a named mountain adds value with your customer, or only adds price.

Format decides more than the tea does

Of our 26 lots, 21 are pressed as 357 g cakes and 11 are available as 500 g loose leaf, either as a gift box or as an export sack. The rest are smaller retail formats: a 144 g mini-tablet box of 24 × 6 g, a 250 g loose-leaf box and a 150 g pouch. A market that buys tea by the cup needs the small formats first; a market that collects and stores tea will take cakes straight away.

This matters more than category for a first order, because format is usually what decides how fast the stock turns. A 357 g cake asks a new customer to commit before they have tasted anything. A 6 g tablet does not.

The three numbers that decide a first order

Our published reference minimums are deliberately small, because the point of a first order is to find out what sells, not to fill a warehouse. The starter sample set is 4–8 teas in small packs; 357 g cakes start at 10 cakes per tea; loose-leaf Dian Hong and white tea start from 2 kg per lot. Private label and OEM are quoted by design, per project.

Build the first order in three steps

  • Shortlist categories and formats that customers already understand.
  • Taste representative samples and confirm the origin, harvest and packing lot in writing.
  • Scale the repeatable teas first, then add named-origin or heritage lots as premium upgrades.

A first order does not need to represent every Yunnan tea style. A smaller, coherent range is easier to explain, test and reorder. Once sales show which profiles work, the range can expand without losing its structure.

What to confirm in writing before you scale

Before a repeat order, the paperwork should be as settled as the taste. These are the documents prepared by destination market:

  • Commercial Invoice and Packing List
  • Certificate of Origin (CO / Form A) where applicable
  • Food-safety or pesticide-residue test report when required
  • Net weight, harvest year and lot confirmation
  • Bill of Lading, carton marks and loading photos

If a supplier cannot say which of these they issue, and in whose name, that tells you more than any tasting note.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Yunnan teas sell best in Western Europe?

In the German, French, Dutch and UK markets a range usually starts with white tea cakes, Dian Hong and approachable raw Pu-erh from Jingmai or Pasha. Traceability and test-report-ready lots matter more there than rare mountain names.

What should a first wholesale order contain?

Two or three categories your customers already understand, in a format they will open: typically one raw Pu-erh, one ripe Pu-erh, one Dian Hong or white tea and a small-format sampler. Named-origin and heritage lots are better added as a second step.

What are your reference minimums?

The starter sample set is 4–8 teas in small packs, 357 g cakes start at 10 cakes per tea, and loose-leaf Dian Hong and white tea start from 2 kg per lot. Private label and OEM are quoted by design, per project.

Do you ship to my market?

We welcome inquiries from buyers in any country. Commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin where applicable and test reports are prepared according to what the destination market requires.
